The Solar System

Well, the year is nearly over and this is our last unit to learn about in science this year. I think everyone is interested in the planets and sun. I also think you already KNOW a few things about the solar system. In class we will learn about differences in the sizes of the planets and the sun. Also we will discover how far apart they are and what FORCE holds everything in its place (orbit) in our solar system. Finally we will compare the features of Earth and the moon. And once we understand that the moon only REFLECTS the sun's light (it is not a source of light like the sun) we will be able to model the PHASES of the moon's monthly cycle.

I am excited about helping you learning more about our solar system. I have selected several more cool websites and activities you can look at for you HOMEWORK! Just kidding---still no homework, but YOU MUST HAVE FUN!
Lots and lots of cool stuff about space... and this site can be read in both english and spanish!!!
Look at this interactive model of our solar system... it is really cool to play with!
Still love ya!

Welcome to 5th grade science edublog !

February 24,2007

Hey everyone!

Did you know that this web page is called an EDUBLOG!! My teacher at WTAMU asked me earlier this month, to write a paragraph telling her what I knew about edublogs. I thought and thought and finally I just wrote "I don't know what an edubog is because I have never even heard of and edublog!" You probably would have answered that question the same way I did!

An edublog can be defined as an electronic bulletin board! I have just created this one to trade information with you on the computer- that means I can share my ideas with you and you can share your ideas with me.
I am really excited about having our own 5th grade science edublog!!! I am going to use it in two different ways.

  1. I am going to let you know about some really cool games, websites, photos and video clips that will give you some more ideas about what we are studying in class!
  2. I am going to let you and your family know about what is happening in our 5th grade science class. What we are doing, what we have done and what we are looking forward to doing! Later on, I hope to be able to show pictures, of your classwork or photos of you working in class, on our edublog!

Also, another great part of this edublog is that you (or your parents) will be able to send your comments or ideas to me. This means that you can let me know what you liked or learned from the games and other FUN stuff I have put in the edublog for you to look at! Everyone in 5th grade know by now how I feel about HOMEWORK. That is why I am so excited and happy about our edublog! This will be an easy way for you to get more information about the science ideas we are learning in class, have fun and STILL have no homework in your science class!! WOW...another perfect idea!!

Well, that was the "welcome to the 5th grade science edublog" letter. Now I will get on with the "good stuff" that I have planned for you!

The subject we will be studying in science next is Earth Science. The part of earth science you are going to be learning about is EARTH PROCESSES. We will be learning about the processes that form the Earth's materials and shape Earth's surface!

EARTH SCIENCE - THE EARTH'S PROCESSES

For the next few weeks you will be learning how certain landforms, rocks and minerals have been formed. We will also learn how waves, running water, earthquakes and glaciers affect the Earth's surface. By looking at objects such as tree growth rings and sedimentary rock sequences we are going to see how we are able to draw conclusions about "what happened before". Also, we are going to talk about the past events that led to the formation of the Earth's natural resources, especially the non-renewable ones! Finally, we will be able to describe various energy resources, such as wind, running water and fossil fuels.

We still have some science objectives to learn this year and we are working hard on getting ready to all pass our Science TAKS test on April 19th !!

Well, here are a few neat websites I found to go along with what we are doing in class! ENJOY!!

See what you think of these activities and this edublog website----See you at school !!

LOVE YOU ALL,
